"Jack Ledger writes like a man chasing ghosts—and catching them."
Jack Ledger is the pen name of Mark Ferland, an American writer whose work draws on a life spent in Alaska, the Navy, Los Angeles, and the Midwest.
Raised in Alaska, he grew up in a world of long winters, rough country, and people who learned early to rely on one another. Those years continue to shape his work: loyalty, distance, survival, memory, and the people who do — and do not — make it through.
He later served in the U.S. Navy aboard a guided missile cruiser before spending more than twenty years in business, primarily in Los Angeles and St. Louis. Throughout it all, he kept writing.
Now writing full time under the name Jack Ledger, Ferland works in memoir and historical fiction, drawing from real places, real events, and the complicated line between truth and memory.
Current projects include:
Where the Wild Boys Are — a memoir about growing up in Alaska among a close-knit group of kids from broken homes who formed their own kind of family
The Navy That Time Forgot — a memoir drawn from two years aboard a guided missile cruiser in the late Cold War era
The Last Cavalier series — a historical fiction series following Franco Lacroix through war, divided loyalties, and the violent underside of 19th-century America
Ledger’s work is interested less in nostalgia than in what remains: the facts, the damage, the loyalty, and the stories people carry long after the rest has been buried.
The stories on this site are built from real places and lived experience, but they are not bound by strict autobiography.
Memory shifts. History leaves gaps. Story fills in the rest.
Across memoir and fiction, the same themes return again and again:
childhood and family
war and aftermath
loyalty, loss, and redemption
the search for meaning after the dust settles
Current work includes the memoir Where the Wild Boys Are, a second memoir centered on naval service in the late Cold War era, and the historical series The Last Cavalier, a long-form saga set during the American Civil War.
These projects are being written slowly, with the goal of getting the story right rather than getting it fast.
More updates will appear here as the work progresses.
